"I liked the fast turn around and ..."

About: Gloucestershire Royal Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

What I liked

I liked the fast turn around and day surgery is quick.

What could be improved

I was in day surgery (arthroscopy)

I scrubbed my knee with detol before I came in as a precaution to avoid infection.

It was busy, I was told to sit down beside my the bed. I refused as the chair had dried vomit on it. Nurse moved it away, and gave me another.

I saw a lady leave, nurse put the hospital gown the lady had worn onto my bed. She said put this on and lie down.

I refused pointing out that it had just been used by someone else.

Annoyed she went off in search of another returning quickly with one which clearly was not freshly laundered either.

However I used it because I was worried about being seen as a trouble maker.

I was unsupervised as I woke and injured my thigh muscles trying to move to soon.

The chair with dried vomit on was back beside the bed still unclean.

I did not see my consultant after the op and found the aftercare to be lacking.

I must point out this was a while ago but did not know you had this facility to comment on your experience at Gloucester.

The gowns should be dispensed in disposable sealed bags to avoid any confusion or contamination.

Spills should be dealt with as they occur by an orderly who is a phone call away.

The Trust is working to achieve the highest levels of patient care and cleanliness possible. The comments raised in this feedback have been passed to the Modern Matron for Theatres and the Day Surgery Unit. The Trust is sorry that the patient found the chair requiring cleaning. The Modern Matorn will continue to inspect these items as part of the ongoing audit of cleanliness on ths Unit. The comment about the gown is extremely concerning, as clean gowns are freely available. The Modern Matron has struggled to understand why a used gown would be offered. All nursing staff are aware of the need to provide clean gowns. Nevertheless, staff have had this observation raised at a recent staff meeting, and whilst equally concerned, will continue to ensure good practice in this regard prevails.

The unit has ‘nurse-lead’ discharge from hospital, and therefore where a patient is ready to leave hospital and meets certain agreed discharge critera, the nursing staff discharge providing full after care information. The Trust is sorry that this patient, found this aspect unhelpful.
