About: Medway Maritime Hospital Medway Maritime Hospital Gillingham ME7 5NY
In July my Dad suffered a burst abdominal aortic aneurysm. He was taken to medway hospital in an ambulance after feeling unwell whilst driving. He was in theatre within twenty minutes of arriving at the hospital. The vascular team were waiting for him after receiving the call from a very competent Paramedic who had correctly diagnosed him. He spent 10 days in an induced coma, 3 weeks in Intensive Care, 1 week in High Dependance and 3 and half weeks in Phoenix Ward. We were told on three occasions that there was nothing more that they could do for him but due to the amazing Vascular Team and the unwavering dedication of the Intensive Care Unit, he survived! I also must not forget the brilliant nutritionists and fantastic physios. The Intensive Care team became like a family to us over the three weeks, nothing was too much trouble and they did absolutely everything in their power for my Dad. We were kept informed at all times, never made to feel that we were in the way and able to ask as many questions as we needed to. They work long gruelling hours, working tirelessly in highly stressful situations. They often go above and beyond the call of duty, and yet they still manage to smile and look after the families of the patients too! I was obviously over the moon when my Dad was getting better and moved to the High Dependancy Unit, but I felt sad to leave the ICU staff. It was a terrible time for me and my family but we feel privileged to have met such an amazing, kind and dedicated group of people. We will never forget them and what they have done for us! As my Dad moved on to High Dependancy and then later to Phoenix Ward he was greeted with an outstanding level of care. It made his recovery easier and quicker. It is such a friendly hospital, we were always met with smiles from the doctors and nurses, also from the car park security men and the lovely ladies in the cafe and canteen. I know that we aren't alone in the way that we feel , when we spoke to other families they had the similar experiences. One gentleman even took the decision to drive his critically ill wife to medway instead of letting the the Paramedics take her somewhere else, as he knew that Medway Hospital is outstanding. It has upset us to hear the bad press that Medway Hospital has received, it is totally unfair, we spent nearly two months in the hospital and found it to be absolutely excellent in every way! I intend to go to the local press in the near future and I hope that they will be interested in a success story instead of reporting the negatives. I can never thank all the people that saved and looked after my Dad enough! Well done to everyone at Medway Maritime Hospital, ignore the press you are amazing!
