"Poor standards and questionable infection control"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

Anything else?

My son was admitted to a&e by ambulance following a convulsion. We were shown to a small dirty assessment room in a&e, with dirty sheets on the trolley (changed by the ambulance staff) used tissues and gloves on the floor, which the nursing staff simply stepped over. The sister in the department took a fan out of a cubicle on placed it on a chair next the trolley, the dust and dirt adorning the fan was revolting - most other hospitals have banned these from an infection control perspective. Once we were seen by a very helpful female consultant we were taken to the childrens ward - on route to the ward I asked the nurse if my son was being admitted and she simply shrugged and stated she had just been told to take us to the ward before she finished her shift. On the ward we were not shown around or shown, my husband stayed overnight and was not even offered a drink of water. Next morning on the ward round the consultant had to keep going out to answer the phone and the nursing staff asked me to obtain a sample of urine - when I asked for a pad for his nappy, I was told to just take his nappy off and follow him around and catch a specimen in a universal container. When I asked what happens for infection control if he was to urinateon the floor the nurse shrugged and said, 'theres paper towels there wipe it up!' We were discharged home after he was offered a turkey burger lumpy cauliflower cheese and rice pudding for lunch. Infection control standards are poor - I would never wish to visit this hospital again!

Dear Madam I was really saddened to read about your experience with your son at North Tyneside Hospital. The care you describe is something that falls extremely short of the standards we’d expect all patients to receive. Our priority is always to provide patients with care that makes them feel both clinically and emotionally safe. I am really sorry that you didn’t experience this. Overall, our patients tell us that the cleanliness in North Tyneside Hospital is of a high a standard, so I was really disappointed and surprised to learn that this wasn't the case for you. It is essential that we address your concerns immediately – any dirt in our rooms is unacceptable to the Trust. We also wouldn’t expect any of our staff to just shrug their shoulders when receiving requests for information from patients. It would be really beneficial for us if senior members of the A&E and paediatric team could discuss this matter with you. Lauraine Gibson is the matron in A&E and Cath O’Kane deputy clinical lead for children services - I know already that they very much want to use the detail in your story to learn and improve and it’s hard for them to be specific when your post remains anonymous ? Please get in touch if you’d be willing for this discussion to go ahead – we are already grateful for all you have shared with us. My email is annie.laverty@nhct.nhs.uk Best Wishes, Annie Laverty
