Attended for laparoscopy to remove ovary. Had been to see about this 3 years earlier and was told by the consultant that he may puncture my bowel if he operated, and, did I see the newspaper article about the lady this had happened to?
Left things until unbearable then saw different consultant who decided to operate. When I came round in recovery area was in worst pain ever. Given morphine and more morphine, no help.
Then anaesthetist appeared and given ketamine, I said "that is a horse tranquiliser", just given it anyway. Felt awful, as if falling through floor.
Taken back to ward where the only caring person I saw advised that I needed to be moved closer to the nurses station in case I "flatlined" as I had been given so much morphine. This did not happen and I was left in the same room.
I spent that night pressing a buzzer that I did not know was not connected and not working. Only found this out when the same nurse called in 1st thing and I said I had been pressing buzzer with no response.
When lunch came round I was advised that I had only been an assumed overnight stay and there was no lunch for me, same with evening meal.
The info I was given on HRT was a joke and luckily I had anticipated this and pre-prepared. (Helped by the lovely nurse who called pharmacy and arranged this for me.)
I was not given adequate pain relief and when asked was advised that the nurses did not have time to check on patients regularly, and that if I required pain relief to come to nurses station and let them know.
Happy to leave ward 42 and the appalling "care" I experienced.
