"Visit to the Eye Hospital Southampton"

About: Southampton General Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

3 days ago my eye became bloodshot and slightly sore, being a mechanic by trade I am fully aware of foreign bodies in the eye, and having metal in my eye before I'm aware of the feeling and symptoms. I left it for 3 days thinking it may settle as it wasnt extremely painful like before.

Today I decided to go into my local eye casualty after work to see if there was something in there, although symptoms hadn't got any worse or better.

After seeing the receptionist, I mentioned I thought I had some sort of foreign body in there. I then carried on up to the second nurse who I found extremely rude and patronising. Asking why I had thought there was something in my eye just because it was bloodshot and if I recalled any metal entering my eye, which I had responded no but had a feeling some grit or something from a dripping car may have come into contact with my eye.

She continued to ask very patronisingly "But can you feel the grit in your eye? ", I thought this was a rather stupid question, as unless it was a rather large piece of grit then I wouldn't feel it. She also asked why had I left it so long, which is fair enough and why I came in at such a silly time (6. 30PM) when they were low on staff, although not very busy. Again I thought this was a silly question as I has been at work all day and as their site indicates, they are a 24H service.

After being made to feel like a prat, I saw the last nurse who inspected my eye and admitted there was a scratch but no sign of anything of which she was very thorough to confirm. This indicated something had been in my eye but had now come out one way or another.

Overall I was not very happy with the nurse's patronising and rude attitude towards me. I'm not sure why this was as I was polite as normal and although I'm young (21), I see myself very polite compared to other people my age.

We were very sorry to read of your poor experience in the Eye Casualty Department and are sorry about how you were made to feel and the attitude of a staff member there when you clearly had a problem with your eye. If you would like to talk to one of us about your experience or would like to discuss this further, please do contact us at the Patient Support Service on 023 8120 6325.
