"felt like a piece of meat"

About: Hexham General Hospital

Anything else?

A recent visit to day surgery left me shocked. My sigmoidescopy procedure was done by a trainee supervised by a consultant (I was given no choice) Apart from filling in consent form with trainee neither spoke to me throughout procedure, indeed I never even saw consultants face as he was bent over computer when I went in with his back to me. The nurse was lovely and tried to reassure me but I became more frightened when she pointed out my very high blood pressure to doctors who ignored her. I asked nurse about sedation but she said it wasn't given with this procedure (even though literature said it was available). I have had this procedure before by a nurse practitioner who was lovely explained what was happening even asked if I would like to watch screen with her and a totally different experience. It was quite ironic to be back in reception area and read a number of wall posters about the importance of patient dignity etc. Perhaps some consultants and doctors should read these and reflect on their 'bedside manner' or lack of it.

Dear Sir / Madam, I was sorry to read about your recent experience at Hexham Hospital and would like to thank you for taking the time to share this with us. We'd expect all our staff to understand how important it is for patients to feel involved and informed - we'd also expect our care to be delivered in a dignified and compassionate manner. I am so sorry that we failed to do either of these things for you. We take this matter very seriously indeed. We're usually very proud of the good relationships our doctors enjoy with their patients. I'd very much like to share this feedback with the people concerned so that we can learn, unfortunately the anonymous nature of this post prevents me from doing this. If you feel this would be helpful please contact me at annie.laverty@northumbria-healthcare.nhs.uk Many thanks, Annie
