I spent 12 days in ward A5 of Wythenshawe hospital with a compressed fracture of a vertebrae. I found the whole experience absolutely amazing! I had excellent care, not only medically but from staff at all levels. I experienced , kindness, cheerfulness and good humour. In my side ward there was a lady with dementia, she was treated with dignity, washed rolled and hand fed for every meal. Staff spent time with her talking about her life and family, it was lovely to see. Her husband came in every day, and her false teeth were lost. He said " they are not looking after you dear are they". So I went over to him and told him about the real quality care I had witnessed every day and night , so he thanked me! It amazed me how such a large institution kept up that culture of positivity considering that so many staff are employed there. It is really exceptional. It aids the feeling of well being, which in turn, I think helps the healing process. There was another lady with slight dementia, she said to me " is this a private hospital?" I wrote about my experiences to the Manchester Evening News and they published my letter, which was good, especially when there is so much bad news around I am truly grateful to live in a city with such an excellent NHS hospital
