"nursing care after hip operation"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I just hope I never need to go back to this hospital. I have no complaint about the operation or the surgeons, but in my view the nursing care was awful.

I felt there was no respect or dignity for female patients and it seemed to me all they cared about was getting people out as quickly as possible for the league tables. After 3 days following my hip operation, a member of the nursing staff said "oh, you are still here, you must have taken root".

I left the hospital with an impacted bowel that put my recovery back weeks.

Dear June Roberts

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We value all feedback as we use this to inform and improve the services we provide.

I have spoken with the Senior Nurse in that directorate who wishes to apologise that you were not informed that the average length of stay for a hip operation is 3 days. Please know that this is not a target but an average length of stay and each patient is discharged on an individual basis.

Please know that following your feedback we have made a change in the pre-assessment process and patients will be made aware of the expected length of stay, though naturally this may change with individual patient needs. We apologise that you left the hospital impacted; this is an aspect of our discharge process that we obviously let you down.

Our Senior Nurse in Orthopaedics is Jenny House who would be very happy to take a call from you on 01202 704720 or alternatively if you wish to discuss further please contact PALS on 01202 704886

Regards

Sue Mellor
