About: Royal Derby Hospital

Anything else?

I had our first baby at the beginning of March, the labour ward downstairs was fantastic and so were the staff in theatre. Both groups had a sense of humour and were friendly. However, when i arrived upstairs on the antenatal ward i was greeted by the complete opposite. Out of all the staff up there, there was only one midwife who was nice and helpful. I was left to it, first time mum and i wasn't shown where to get anything from to do my baby's nappy, i was wired up, had a blood pressure sleeve on (which they forgot i had so i took it off myself) and a kapither so i struggled to reach my baby to get her out of the crib. She was put in the crib in just a blanket and i couldn't change her till my husband came back in the morning, so she was in the crib all night without any clothes on as i wasn't offered any help. I was offered one cup of tea for my whole stay, i had to send my husband over to Aldi to stock up on drink as the midwives wanted to me to urinate so they could check it but without any liquids in me i was finding this rather difficult and actually got told off for not weeing much. I was told that i was going to be discharged and then when my husband asked when i could go he was told that i wasn't allowed to go home now with no reason, i was then discharged at 7am the next morning. I was told to get use to our daughter crying all the time because i was a mum now and then the midwife who said this to me stormed off leaving me sobbing on the bed with a crying newborn, the nice midwife (on the night shift) came in and helped me feed our daughter as i wasn't filling her and she had been crying constantly and trying to feed off me for 3 hours. I asked for some formula and my request was dismissed and i was made to feel like a bad mother for even asking until the nice midwife came in and she did what i requested. Don't even get me started on the food, i was offered one meal which resembled the plastic food i was bought when i was 6 years old for my toy kitchen. Revolting. A woman across the way from me was complaining about how she had been treated and was demanding to speak to a midwife in charge and i have heard nothing but bad things about the ward upstairs since having our daughter. I am so put off by my experience that we have decided when we have our next baby then we are going to travel from Derby centre to Nottingham and go to Notts City or QMC.

Before I commence, may I take the opportunity to congratulate you and all your family on the birth of your first baby in March this year. However, although I was pleased to note that you felt your care at the beginning and progressing through your pregnancy was very positive, I was very sorry and disappointed to learn that you felt this changed when your care was transferred to our Antenatal Ward (314). I am sure that our Head of Midwifery and the Matron for Maternity Services, will be very keen to hear more of your experience on Ward 314 so that they can investigate these matters more closely and respond to you in more detail. If you would therefore like to contact our Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) team on Freephone 0800 7837691 or via email dhft.contactpals@nhs.net to provide us with more specific details of your concerns that occurred during your stay with us in March this year, I am sure they will be able help you further and instigate the process of investigation on your behalf. Once again, many thanks for taking the time to provide us with your feedback of this experience and please accept my sincere apologies for any upset caused on this occasion. Deborah Furness, from the Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Patient Experience Team
