"Car parking charges - Hertford County Hospital"

About: Hertford County Hospital

Anything else?

The parking charges are disgraceful (for clarity, that's too expensive); and it is utterly disingenuous to cite as reasons the excuses given for such a charge. It is well understood measures need to be implemented to ensure the car park is exclusively for the use of visitors to the Hospital. However, resorting to an egregious fleecing of such Hospital users (many of which as you well know, are onsite for a matter of the few minutes needed for a blood test) is a rapacious, opportunistic and unjust practice. It is also a damning indictment of those responsible for such a policy. I hope my (attempted) lucidity and brevity passes muster, but I won't hold my breath!

Your concern about car parking charges at our hospitals is clear and we also accept that it is unlikely that any explanation will be of help - but here goes. Across our hospital sites, the cost of providing parking amounts to some £1 million a year. We get no funding for this, so we have two choices - take this very significant amount of money from existing hospital funding or make a charge. The latter is set so that our costs are covered; if there is a small surplus, this gets ploughed back in to patient care. We do understand the frustration, however, of only spending a few minutes in a hospital like Hertford County only to be charged for being there longer than you may have expected. Whilst this, in some ways at least, is a testament to the speed and quality of our services these days, we can also see why this could lead people to feeling concerned at the cost of parking for such a short visit. When it comes to blood tests, there is a solution - these now happen at a number of different places in the community and not just at our hospitals. Often these sites do not charge for parking or the cost may be less.
