"left in waiting room/corridor in just my underwear"

About: Cumberland Infirmary

Anything else?

I attended for a procedure in the diagnostic imaging department at the Cumberland Infirmary which required me to strip down to underwear and hospital gown. After the procedure I had to wait for several hours until the effects of the treatment wore off. I was told I had to stay in my gown, but was left on a chair in the corridor with countless members of the public walking past. Most embarrasing of all was that I had to keep standing up and walking about (as instructed by staff) to speed up the recovery from the procedure - whilst doing this, the back of the gown kept coming undone. The staff were few and far between and I was unable to attract the attention of a nurse regarding fastening my gown. I was not the only patient who had undergone this procedure, which meant that there were a number of us, including a very elderly lady, enduring a very embarrassing few hours indeed. There appeared to be no concept from the staff that we were all undergoing a rather humiliating time. I am aware that the procedure I underwent does require a period of observation afterwards, but if this cannot be undertaken without subjecting patients to such indignities, then the hospital should not be carrying out this treatment. I was extremely reluctant to raise this as an issue at the time. This concern was the view of my fellow patients as well. I have since accompanied a friend who underwent the same procedure at the RVI in Newcastle and the aftercare could not have been more different - each patient was taken back to a curtained-off area on a ward and was reviewed regularly by the nurse, as well as being given a nurse call alarm to protect both their safety and dignity. Please note that I entered General Medicine as the department as there was no option on the drop-down list for diagnostic imaging and the field cannot be left blank. .
