"Redwood 1 Feedback"

About: Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Adult mental health (inpatient)

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

Hi

I had a brilliant time on Redwood 1. The staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful. The food was brilliant, the smoke breaks were perfect and the entertainment was second to none.

However, I am a habitual liar. Most of the staff were good; the food was as can be expected in an institution. The fag breaks are a disgrace. What you should do is have the courtyard open at all times.

All lighters should be taken off people and a permanent lighter attached to the wall in the courtyard. The inmates could smoke whenever they want.

This is what calms people down and would keep a lid on the cuckoo’s nest.

Try it.

All the best.

Hi Janzq3, I initially thought we were doing well, but on reading on it sounds like your time on the ward was indifferent and for that I am sorry. I am glad you had some good time with staff and you felt some were 'good'. With regards to your comments on the food on the ward, we have a 3 weekly menu which is updated every few months. The menu's are devised with input from dieticians and look into correct amounts of calorie intake needed for males. The types of meals are not to everyones taste/choice and on the ward we have patient meetings/brunch meetings which collect peoples opinions on food. There are also catering meetings held at Highbury, which we can feedback issues/opinions of patients which can lead to menu changes. If you have any ideas which you would like me to forward to this meeting please contact me to do this. With regard to cigarette breaks as a trust we are a non smoking site, promoting smoking cessation and offering advice to reduce/stop smoking, but obviously when people come into hospital in distress/acute phases in their life and they smoke reducing their smoking intake is not on the fore front of their mind. We then provide for those who for different reasons can not leave the ward we offer specific smoke times, these are usually every hour and a half (environment permitting). Due to having to staff the outside areas for safety and risk reasons, this is why our outside areas cannot be left open all the time. With regard to lighters we do ask when people reurn to the ward to hand lighters in for safety reasons and most do adhere to this request. Having lighters outside attached onto walls maybe a risk issue relating to gas or lighter fluids being accessible /stored on walls. I am not sure about this and do not know of any acute inpatient area where this is an option but will look into this.

I can only imagine to come into hospital if you are experiencing some form of mental ill health and then to not have simple things such as accesss to cigarettes when you want one and food that you like does not help. If you wish to discuss this in more detail please feel free to contact me on the ward on 0115 9691300 ex 16364. Please know your experience will be taken on board and fedback to the team on Redwood 1.

Thanks you for taking the time to post your comments.
