About: Leighton Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I was extremely impressed by the care received at Leighton Hospital. My son recently had his tonsils and adenoids removed (21/2/08). The staff provided information prior to the operation and on the day that helped reduced the anxiety my son felt. On the day we met each member of the nursing and surgical team. Each patient on Ward 16 was treated like a VIP! There was also evidence that accurate records were kept between depts and between different hospitals (my son is undergoing investigation for genetics at another hospital).

My husband and I were really impressed by the high level of care offered throughout and reinforces the valuable asset we have in the NHS.

Additionally I was treated for a fracture at the A&E dept (on the same day!) and staff here were exceptionally efficient and helpful. The staff in both depts are respectul, friendly, professional and should feel proud of the service they offer.

Really nice restaurant too - we had a lovely breakfast.

What could be improved

A hot drinks machine in the parents' room - there is a lot of waiting around and we were reluctant to leave the ward to get drinks.

New hosptial gowns for the kids - it took a few gowns to find one that had ties and was the right size. They were really worn as well - I'd happily buy one beforehand if necessary.

The staff were busy all the time - I got the impression they had little time to take a break. It would be a pity if such dedicated staff weren't being allowed adequate time to take proper breaks.

Thank you for taking the time to let us have your very positive comments about Leighton Hospital and the care it provided to your son when he was a paient on ward 16, your care in Accident and Emergency and indeed your appreciation of the facilities in the dining room. Your comments will be forwarded onto the relevant areas where I am sure all staff will be delighted by your very positive feedback.

In response to things you would like to see improved I happy to advise as follows:

The provision of a hot drinks machine in the parents room on ward 16 has been risk assessed and found not to be appropriate as it is a waiting area for hearing tests, rather than a parents room. This room therefore allows access for children waiting for such tests as well as other siblings. A parents room, as the one on ward 17, does not allow children and therefore hot drinks are available for drinking within the room. Staff do try to provide the best facilities for parents but are obviously governed by regulations. The facility of thermo cups is available for parents of children who are extremely poorly such as patients on the High Dependency Unit within the wards.

A delivery of new gowns have now been received and the ward stocked in all available sizes. The ward staff also know that if they run short they can contact the sewing room for additional stock

With regard to staff breaks every effort is made to ensure that staff get their regular breaks, but sometimes staff do decide to take breaks whenever it is feasible to assist continuity of care for patients and enusre that lists are kept running without delays. This is due to the focus and dedication of the excellent team within the Paediatric Unit.

On behalf of all staff within the Paediatric Unit the Ward Manager has asked that her sincere thanks be offered for this very positive feedback.
