"Amazon Ward"

About: Peterborough City Hospital

Anything else?

My child was admitted to Amazon Ward followed an accident where he required surgery to clean and stitch quite a bad wound to his finger. He was 4yrs old. On arrival we were allocated a bed but the nurse couldn't find his notes. She took his details and gave him an id bracelet after finding him on the computer system. Introductory checks were made inc blood pressure, temp etc and the nurse assumed the notes were with the Consultant. After some time on the ward (abt an hourish), a completely new nurse rushed in and said "We thought we lost you, I've phoned your house asking where you were and your husband said you left ages ago" Apparently we had been put in the wrong bay - very poor communication between staff. Common sense would have been to check the whole ward to see if we had arrived surely? Operation went well. When my son came round and the gen anaesthetic began to wear off he developed a headache and his hand was a little painful. The nurse went to get his written up pain relief. She came back and told me she couldn't give him any as the Consultant had incorrectly written it up as three times the dosage it should have been. The Consultant was still in theatre and apparently there was no one else available to re-write the medication dosage. My 4yr old had to wait for the headache and pain to subside on it's own. Not acceptable.

I am so sorry that you had such a bad experience when you attended the hospital with your son. This is not what we would wish anybody using our services to experience. I would like to look into this in more detail so that we can learn from your experiences and with that in mind would ask that you contact me directly. My email address is lesley.crosby@pbh-tr.nhs.uk.

Once again my apologies for any distress caused to you or your son and I hope that he is now fully recovered.
