"Very useful, but long awaited service"

About: Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Mental Health Services for Older People – Inpatient

(as a carer),

When my husband was discharged from St Francis Hospital, Nottingham, in August 2012 we were recommended speech therapy but also warned that it could be a year for a therapist to be available as there is only one therapist assigned to Nottingham.

In August 2013 a year later, a therapist did visit us. Margaret Metcalf has been extremely helpful in giving us the help and support we need to help my husband and I to communicate with each other. She has shown us different techniques that have been very, very useful.

However, I think it is bad that there is only one therapist available. My husband has vascular dementia, a lot can happen in a year and it’s dreadful that people need to wait so long.

Thank you for your positive comments on the service Margaret provided. Unfortunately we currently only have a very limited Speech and Language Therapy service. The issue has been highlighted and an increase to the service for people with dementia will be one of the recommendations we make to commissioners during the redesign of the whole of Mental Health Services for Older People over the next year.
