"Outpatients visits to the neurology clinic for..."

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

Anything else?

The outpatients is used by several different conditions at the same time. It is hot, overcrowded and generally running late. After all of the waiting the consultant spends very little time with you and rarely makes any useful suggestions. Although I invariably fill in the Non-motor symptoms questionnaire downloaded from Parkinson's UK website it is rarely looked at and the problems are not addressed. If there is any need for me to see other specialities then a further appointment is necessary wasting more time and money sending appointment letters. I have been offered only 3 sessions of physio in the 7 years since I have been diagnosed and have been given a variety of drugs but have not had any other treatments recommended. My general state of health has not been monitored regularly, despite the quantity of drugs which I take. Without Parkinson's UK information would be very hard to get

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry you have had a negative experience of the neurology services we provide and that you found the outpatient environment hot and overcrowded. Our team do try to keep patients updated on the lateness of the clinics if they are running over their allotted time but as we're sure you understand, it is often quite difficult to anticipate the needs of individuals attending clinics and invariably some patients need more time than others, causing delays in the system. Your consultant will be more than happy to discuss the issues you have raised in more depth at your next outpatient appointment and he will liaise with the lead nurse for neurological conditions to discuss ways that could improve the services we provide. Our outpatient sister is also happy to hear suggestions of ways to improve the department. We have recently held an outpatient patients feedback session and one suggestion from this meeting was to look at the possibility of telephone consultations, which the clinical team is investigating.
