This story has been posted by Healthwatch Tameside on behalf of a member of the public who asked not to have their name published. They said:
I am 80. I was referred by my former GP in Ashton-under-Lyne for a general health check, and after a bone scan, was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Advised to ask GP to prescribe medication.
Meanwhile had changed my GP to one within easier walking distance. He was reluctant to prescribe until I had another bone scan, as he hadn't ordered the first one. Second bone scan confirmed osteoporosis.
I went on medication but had severe gastric side effects. Tried another tablet with same effect. Now on one which suits me better but would like a scan to see if any improvement. GP obviously thinks I am a nuisance, and I don't feel able to discuss my needs and anxieties with him.
Just want to know if I have to keep on taking medication.
