I was admitted with constant vomiting, had the camera down and they took a biopsy. I was anxious and the assistant was very nice and held my hand through the whole thing. I was given anti-emetics orally but couldn't keep them down, they came up after just 10 seconds, and the doctor and staff refused to put me on IV anti-emetics and fluids. The doctor and nurses asked when was the last time I opened my bowels and I told them that it was about 3 weeks ago but they did not offer me anything to get my bowels started again. I was told that it was my anxiety that was making me sick, and I told them that it wasn't- I know the difference. No one would listen to me. They kept sending me home saying to just keep trying to drink and to "relax" and nothing worked. I had been vomiting almost constantly for over 6 weeks and was bedridden from dehydration and lack of food. After just one day of being home I started with severe kidney pains and realised that I hadn't passed any urine for a day. I was rushed back into hospital and the A&E staff were brilliant. I wish the same could be said for the ward staff. I was told that I would "be weeing myself and not realising". I was 22 at the time. After 3 days of them not believing me a doctor agreed to have me a catheter fitted so I could "see I was weeing". After 10 hours I was woken up by a nurse and she told me that I had kidney failure. Yes, both my kidneys had completely failed. Why? because I was refused IV fluids for 6 weeks. They told me that they would either send me to sheffield or put me in intensive care. They finally put a large amount of fluids in me and sent me to Sheffield. In Sheffield I was put in the renal unit and was treat like a patient should be treat. In just one day Sheffield did many thorough tests and they found out my bowel had stopped working and I was dangerously low on vitamins and potassium, threatening to stop more organs from working. They fitted me a line and gave me fluids, multivitamins, potassium and anti-emetics IV. Within just a few days they had cleared my blockage in my bowel, got it working again and I managed to keep fluids and a little food down for the first time in 2 months. I was told I had been quite close to death and was lucky to have survived. I was allowed home to recover and I have been left with long term problems. I have scarring on my kidneys, I have gastroparesis and I cannot absorb vitamin B12 so I have to have injections every 3 months. However, the worst is the mental scars I have been left with. I am terrified that I am going to become ill again and die and I am terrified to leave the house. A year later and I am still not over it. I suffer daily. It is not something that I can report because it has been too long. If I can help it I will not use barnsley again.
