Over this last weekend I developed an infection of the eyelid and went to see an out of hours GP (Prospect House, Kettering). I was prescribed an ointment and antihistamines however the infection worsened and I went back the next day. I have a baby and the drive is half an hour each time so a bit of an upheaval. On the second consultation I was prescribed oral antibiotics and was told I was on the verge of needing to go to A&E. I was told to monitor the infection over 24h and if no better to go to A&E. The following day my face was swollen from my eyelid down to my lip and towards my nose. I went to A&E as instructed after dropping my baby at nursery and reorganising various meetings for work, waited 1h20mins only to be told that further treatment could not be given without 3 days passing on the antibiotics and/or a fever. I am writing this in the hope that it is passed on and may led to a better relationship between GPs and hospital medics in the future. GPs need to understand what can be done in A&E and advise accordingly to save patients the stress and frustrations which I experienced today.
