About: Alexandra Hospital

Anything else?

I had the displeasure staying for what felt like a life time. Sent to A and E with a GP letter just after 6pm, to be kept waiting for 2.5 hours before being called in to see a surgeon. I was left in a side room in A and E for a further 50 minutes before the surgeon arrived to say i could go home but be back at 8.00 am the next day nil by mouth from midnight as i would go to theatre from S D U bt 1 pm. I did this but was then told it would be 3 pm, then 5pm then 7pm i finally got so fed up hungry, dehydrated they put a drip up and i finally got to theatre at 22.10 nearly 24 hours nil by mouth. Nurses were great and the anaesthetist was apologetic, but no such response from surgeon. I couldn't wait to get out the next day. Staff numbers bellow what was needed, lack of porters, no people skills from those at desk including trainee doctors it was as though i was invisible. Serious service issues all round the only nice people were a doctor, ward sister, trainee nurse and a care assistant. As an ex nurse suitably unimpressed. I don't blame the staff i blame the system it is too over stretched

Thank you for taking the time to let us know of your experiences in the Alexandra Hospital. We always take on board comments made and would like to learn from them. It is not always possible to predict the time a patient will have a procedure performed and this explanation should have been forthcoming from our staff prior to and during your admission. I apologise that this did not happen in your case. I will also review with the ward sister the actions regarding the length of time you were unable to drink prior to theatre. However, it is pleasing to read that you felt the nurses were great. If you would like to discuss the issues you experienced further please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Services department on 0300 123 1733 who will inform me. Helen Pulis, Matron
