"Unfair treatment at blood donation"

About: NHS Blood and Transplant

(as the patient),

I went to donate blood for the second time in Gosport.

All the tests and questions were fine so I went ahead to the beds. After removing my cardigan my self harm scars were visible although all scarred and no fresh wounds. The woman in charge of putting the needle in and everything looked at my arms and very loudly said that "my arms may make people feel uncomfortable and so I am not going to let you donate blood today". This meant that I had to go away, very embarrassed at having it pointed out and upset that I wasn't being treated fairly for an old condition.

I would've understood if there were any fresh injuries that there could be an infection risk but they were all old and posed no risk and no where near to the donation site.

Also I later found out that they had put a stop on my donation and put on my record that it was because of a delayed faint after my last donation which was untrue.

Very very disappointed in the service

Dear CAMHS user

Firstly let me apologise for the delay in responding to your post, we are new to Patient Opinion as of today and we will endeavor to respond in a timely manner to all comments posted on here in future.

Thank you also for taking the time to tell us of your experience, I value your opinion and would want to ensure that colleagues learn from hearing from donors experiences to ensure that we continually improve our care. Since reading of your experience I have shared your post and spoken to some members of staff internally. Would you mind getting in touch with me so that we can look into this in more detail and speak to the staff at the donor centre involved. You can email me at lorraine.wright@nhsbt.nhs.uk.

Thanks again
