From my admission to Ward 4 Bedroom 3 with pneumonia on 27th September to my discharge on the 9th of October, I was treated with the utmost dignity and compassion and every procedure was explained to me. Even at the most painful times, the staff were considerate and never forced any procedure on you unless it was absolutely needed, and even then with consent and much compassion. I can state clearly that with out the staff nurses, I would not have been able to stand the pain of the disease (treatment) nor the isolation and loneliness of being ill will no family with in 300 miles. Each of the nurses were fantastic and I have no problem in calling the angels of mercy (both male and female). One nurse in particular (I will not mention names so as not to embarrass) was so supportive that I think towards the end of the treatment, that it was here alone that carried me though. This is in no way to be taken as an indication that the other nurses were not as equally supportive to the other patients; after all we are each different, and are comforted by different persona traits. Given the amount of physical amount of hard labour these Nurses have to perform on large wards with minimal staffing levels (at night 3 nurses in ward 4) whilst remaining alert and compassionate, beggars believe. Not only that, but they suffer a level of verbal abuse (from admittedly ill patients) that boggled my mind with complete passiveness and love no matter what. They never avoided such patients nor sedated them, nor answered them back with anything but calm professionalism and compassion. The nurses showed no favoritism and treated each patient as an equal worthy of their time. Nor did I ever see them stint on the workload, although they may have been on duty 14 hours. This certainly places them well into the good Samaritan camp and pretty close to angelic as far as I am concerned. If more of us followed their principals then this world would surely be a much better place. For they truly love all without reservation as Our Lord taught, is the way we should live our lives.
