About: South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw

(as the patient),

I am currently going through a bad flare up of crohn's disease which I have been unable to get under control. The hospital put me on a high dose of steroids to try and get the inflammation under control. This helped at first but as I reduced the dose the symptoms came back. I contacted my ibd nurse today who instructed me to up the dose substantially as I am unable to eat or get out of bed. She said I should contact my gp immediately as I didnt have enough steroids to do this and get me through the weekend. Spoke to a very abrupt member of staff today. I explained the situation and I was advised to put it in writing? ! ? ! I told the person it was an emergency really and that you cant risk not taking steroid medication once you are on it as it causes adrenal failure. The response was that it couldn't be dealt with over the phone. Well that's fantastic isn't it? What medical training does this person actually have? Who is they to decide who gets there medication and when? So I need to make a trip to a & e now and take up their valuable time? How long before this person gives advise that makes someone seriously ill or even worse results in death? I doubt any action will be taken as they are obviously put there as some sort of dragon to prevent people annoying the poor over worked doctors! . Its hard enough living with a chronic disease without treatment like this.
