My mother in law was admitted recently to Whipps as she had not eaten for a couple of days and was feeling very poorly. It has been noted that each time she refused the tray of food or ate only at a tiny amount ( an inch at most of the beef) at no point was a record made of this. Therefore the doctors and nurses were unaware that she has continued to refuse food and therefore no medication has been given to support her. It would only take a tick chart at the end of the bed to record what a patient is eating/drinking. We do this with severely disabled children in the school that I work at. To leave someone in a hospital bed without ensuring they are eating and drinking is not what one would expect from any hospital. On top of this the hospital has no interest in accessing patients NHS records. So my mother in law's medical history of heart disease and cancer and medication she is taken have all been disregarded and left to her ( she is suffering from early dementia) to tell the nurses and doctors what is wrong with her/current medication. There is software available to ensure that patients history is readily available at the touch of a button yet here we are with a hospital not having any idea on what a patients previous history is and what medication they need. Lastly one chair per bed is not a way to treat visitors. Whilst the need to restrict visitors is understandable, to make one person sit and the other stand or sit on the floor for hours is not.
