"I was admitted to Southport & ..."

About: Southport & Formby District General Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I was admitted to Southport & Formby DGH through A&E with a Monteggio’s fracture on 31 May. I found everyone I dealt with to be kind, professional and inspiring of confidence. This includes the Paramedics who picked me up from where I fell in Birkdale, the A&E staff and X-ray and Porters.

Once I was admitted for surgery, I found the Nurses, Care assistants and all the other staff on Ward 14 to be kind, understanding and helpful and again, completely professional, although at times having to try to be in many places at once. I was also really impressed by how clean the ward was kept.

The Medical Teams explained everything that would happen and inspired complete confidence. In the event I did not experience anything like the level of pain I was told I might experience after the operation. The physiotherapist helped me feel more comfortable immediately.

I would be very grateful if you could pass my pain experience on to the Anaesthetists and anyone else interested. I would be delighted if my experience can help in any research into pain management.

All in all I was hugely impressed by how the whole system works together, no doubt including staff who work behind the scenes, eg Pharmacists, Kitchen staff, Admin staff etc.

What could be improved

I have never been in hospital before as an in patient. Because I was an emergency admission I didn't have the helpful info that's on your website. A leaflet on the ward would have helped me advise my husband what to bring etc.
