"Car parking South Tyneside hospital "

About: South Tyneside District Hospital / General surgery

(as a relative),

My mother who is an Alziemers sufferer had an operation to remove a large cancerous tumour. She was sent home to recover and she experienced a problem which required her to go straight away to ward 3. I took her to the hospital immediately as requested and found that there was no where to park near the hospital entrance. In fact there wasn't any places to park at all at 10. 30 am on a Monday morning

I stopped a motorist who had just parked and explained my situation she kindly gave up her space.

Next problem my mother could not stand and was In pain, I had to somehow get her out of the car and walk 200 yards to the day clinic where a volunteer helped me to find a wheelchair to transport her to the ward my mother was very distressed and.

The surgeons ward staff nurses and care was excellent,

The logistics at the hospital are woeful and totally inadequate, I would suggest that some one visits the Freeman where there us patient drop off areas to accommodate this very situation.

Dear Malcus Thank you for taking the time to post your recent experience of our services on NHS Choices website. I am truly sorry to learn of the difficulties you experienced when bringing your mother into the hospital recently. We are in the process of reviewing our car parking arrangements across the hospital site and I will ensure your comments are passed on to the appropriate manager for consideration as part of the review. We are also looking at the number of wheelchairs we have at various locations across the hospital site to arrive at the right balance for those circumstances you describe. I apologise again for any additional stress and anxiety this caused your mother. Kind regards Lorraine B Lambert Chief Executive
