"Accessing fertility treatment"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

We were sent for fertility tests by our GP in gravesend and we were appalled at the process my husband had to undergo to get initial tests done. Services were so disjointed. Firstly he was given a sample pot by our GP and asked to take this to Medway maritime with his sample within an hour. It took him 30mins to get there then 10 mins to get parked and then rush to find the correct lab. Once he got there he was told it was the wrong pot and the sample could not be used. He contacted his GP and got a second container yet the same happened again once we got to Medway hospital. He got a pot from the hospital this time which was finally the correct pot and accepted. This whole process was very frustrating particularly when it's such a sensitive issue. Many would have given up and be put off by the whole process.

I am extremely sorry to hear about your experience and appreciate how frustrating the process has been for you. It is really important that the sample is delivered to our lab in the correct pot. These pots are lab tested to ensure the plastic does not affect the lab result. As your GP issued you with the incorrect pot, you should have been given the correct pot when you presented your first sample at the hospital. I am sorry this did not happen and will look into why. I also appreciate the points you raise around timing. The sample does need to be tested within a strict period of time and I realise how difficult this can be, particularly if you live outside of Medway. If you would like to discuss the matter further, please do not hesitate to contact me. Gurjit Lindsay Senior Biomedical Scientist Email: gurjit.lindsay@medway.nhs.uk
