"Gastroscopy was so easy"

About: University Hospital Lewisham

Anything else?

I had to have a Gastroscopy on 20th September. The thought of having a long tube and camera thrust down my throat was not something I was looking forward to. The choice of sedation or throat spray were explained and discussed. I chose to have the spray and avoid sedation. The whole procedure was explained fully and clearly and my details were taken and check by a really helpful and friendly nurse. As a Type 2 diabetic who had been fasting for 7 hours I was concerned about my BSL but the nurse checked this for me and reassured me. The doctor doing the procedure explained exactly what would happen, any possible side effects, and answered questions patiently and fully. The throat spray tasted of bananas and quickly sedated my throat, mouth and tongue and after getting into position on my side the doctor started the procedure. I did gag a couple of times as it went down, but nothing serious. I felt no pain or discomfort and before I knew it the procedure was over, The doctor sat down and wrote her report and assured me everything was clear and fine. I walked home (a mile), none the worse for wear and, following instructions, waited an hour before eating. I had no after effects, pain or soreness. The staff were really good at answering questions and reassuring; the procedure room and equipment were spotless, nurses friendly and professional, and the doctor patient and informative. I would recommend Lewisham to any person requiring this procedure and would add; don't worry about it, the staff are great, it doesn't hurt, and you will be fine afterwards. the mouth spray is perfectly adequate (even for a nervous patient).
