"Patient preferences ignored"

About: Freeman Hospital

Anything else?

I was referred by my GP to the One Stop Prostate Assessment Clinic. Despite being assured that the sensitive nature of my symptoms would mean I would be sensitively dealt with this was not always the case. I was not given the choice of gender for intimate examinations and was told I should not expect to set out my requirements to medical staff. It seems the nurses assume men are happy to discuss and be examined by either gender and only women could possibly have cultural or religious needs for gender selected care. The clinic was kept to time and it was well organised. I could not complete all my assessment and have now found alternative care arrangements with a team who are more sensitive to my modesty and dignity.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments about your visit to the Freeman Hospital on NHS Choices. We are pleased to note that the clinic was well organised and kept to time. All of our staff aim to meet the highest standards of patient care at all times so we are very disappointed to read that you felt your needs were not dealt with sensitively. Your feedback has been forwarded to the Urology department for discussion with the Prostate Cancer Team and to remind staff about the need for sensitivity at all times. The team does not include a male clinical nurse specialist, however we do feel that all of our staff, regardless of their gender have the knowledge, experience, skills and sensitivity to understand and emphasise with patients undergoing investigations and treatment, and we sincerely apologise if this was not your experience. As we do not have specific details of your visit, we are unable to look into your concerns in more detail and provide you with a personal response. If you would like us to do this, please contact Ms Pam Yanez, Directorate Manager or Matron Sally Ridley on 0191 233 6161, who will be happy to help with your enquiry.
