"Insensitive consultation for Infertility."

About: John Radcliffe Hospital

Anything else?

I was referred to the Oxford Fertility Unit for Infertility treatment in 2013. The referral was fast and I saw a consultant within 4 weeks. However the consultant was very dismissive and acted more as a IVF salesman than a consultant doctor. He offered no information or advice on how we might improve our chances of getting pregnant naturally. He simply said that we could pay for IVF now or wait 6 months to have it paid for by the NHS. He then proceeded to 'sell the features' of the Oxford Fertility Unit over other units. At the end of the very brief appointment (which would have lasted only 5 minutes if I had not pressed him to answer my questions), he said so do you want to proceed with IVF now or wait? It was like being sold double glazing and was an extremely upsetting and confusing experience, which served only to cause more anxiety about the issue.
