Anything else?
In March 2013 I attended physiotherapy for knee pain. I was told that there was a problem with my knee and referred to an orthopaedic consultant. I saw the consultant in April. He explained very clearly what the problem was, explained the treatment options, the advantages and disadvantages of the various alternatives and helped me reach a decision about treatment. I was able to choose my operation date to fit in with my work pattern. I had a total knee replacement in June. Everything possible was done to support a good outcome. The procedure was explained clearly and I felt that I knew exactly what to expect. I was given Prehabilitation Physiotherapy to help prepare for a successful outcome. The Occupational Therapy department provided suggestion and aids to make my return home as easy as possible. On the day of the operation, I thought everything possible was done to reassure me. The anaesthetist was great, and for the first time ever I experienced no nausea after a general anaesthetic. The operation went very well, with excellent results. I am very grateful to the surgeon. The aftercare was exemplary. The nursing staff made every effort to make my recovery comfortable. Pain management was excellent. The physiotherapists were very positive, patient and supportive, helping me to progress as quickly as possible, both on the ward and in rehabilitation classes after I was discharged. It is now September, some three months since the operation. I am walking far further than I could before the operation. I can cycle and swim, and am able to go back to the activities I enjoyed before the problems with my knee started. My knee continues to improve as I exercise it. The whole experience showed the NHS at its best. My heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Guy’s Hospital.
