"Alexandra Day Stay Unit- Kind, Caring,..."

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

Anything else?

I was admitted to the Alexandra Day Stay Unit yesterday. From the moment I arrived until the moment I left the experience was perfect. The lady on the front desk was helpful, professional, patient and organised. I did not have to wait long before a very nice lady took me onto the ward and I was immediately seen by the anaethetist who was very friendly and reassuring. The Sister of the ward was very professional, friendly and helpful. The ward was spotless and there were people constantly cleaning up. The surgeon came to see me and was very reassuring and helpful. For me the most reassuring and professional part of my visit was the after care on the recovery ward. I took quite a while to feel strong enough to sit up and was given plenty of time to recover at my own pace. The surgeon came and explained the proceedure and also had to deliver me some potentially difficult news which was done sensitively and then the Sister made sure I had understood aswell. I was offered tea and toast and water and these were in constant supply and offered with compassion and kindness. The Sister and her team were very patient , comapssionate and supportive of us ladies all coming round. The lights were low and the ward was quiet. The bedding was replaced regulary and even though I had eventually left my bed and gone to sit in a chair once I became light headed and felt sick I was ushered back to a clean bed and a male nurse came and administered anti sicknes drugs in the blink of an eye. My husband and daughter came to pick me up and they were welcomed and then whilst final checks were done on me it was done sensitively as to not to alarm my daughter. Once I was ready to leave and only when I was ready to leave I was allowed home with my husband. There was no hint of being rushed or hurried even though I was the last to leave by some way I wasnt made to feel that the nurses were desperate to rush off. All in all a very positive experience and were I ever to need to go into a day care ward again I would not hesitate to go to this facility.

Dear Ms Banham, The Princess Alexandra Hospital cannot often claim to have delivered perfect care! And as we know the NHS does not always get things right, so it is pleasing to read about your experience. I know the whole team will be pleased to read your comments and of course will want to keep on ensuring that we deliver a patient centred, clinically led service, where we put you at the centre of what we do. I do hope we always deliver care to these excellent standards but I know there may be times when you will have questions about care or concerns. In those cases, please do get in touch with us as soon as you can and we will do everything we can to put things right. The Patient Experience Team is on 01279 827084, five days a week from 9am to 5pm and we will be ready to respond.
