"No lab result over a week"

About: Croydon University Hospital

Anything else?

My daughter was sent to Willows in Croydon University Hospital for mumps serology test. The blood was taken on the 4th of September, and the result wasn't sent to the GP until today (12 September) which is over a week. Fortunately, my daughter is well now. But should it is a case of mumps, it will go undetected and untreated. Which is really bad. Regards, Adhit

Dear Adhit, Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience with us and we are glad that your daughter is feeling better. The Trust has robust guidelines for the length of time that different tests are expected to be conducted and returned to doctors which are in line with those used by other NHS Trusts; your test was conducted and sent to your GP within that time period. It is good practice for patients and their families to be told when they should expect their test results to be returned and we apologise if we didn't do this. Mumps is a serious illness and we understand the concern that you have for your daughter's wellbeing. A mumps diagnosis is initially made by a doctor, who will make sure that clinical precautions are taken while tests are conducted to either confirm or rule out whether mumps is present. Although tests are important in making sure that mumps are diagnosed and effectively treated, a potential mumps case would not be left in limbo while these tests are being conducted. If you would like to discuss your daughter's care further, please contact us through our PALS team on 020 8401 3210 or talktous@croydonhealth.nhs.uk
