I recently completed a course of chemotherapy at Wansbeck. This was the second time I had undergone chemo but the first time at this hospital. The experience was as good as it possibly could be thanks to the kindness and professionalism of the staff. Patients were greeted with a lovely smile by the ward clerk (the initial greeting on entering a ward is so important and other hospitals could learn a lot from this unit). The standard of humour was high, but patients needing a little more peace and quiet were treated with great sensitivity, as were those who were more vulnerable than most. Staff understood that people undergoing chemo need a bit of TLC and can't be treated as though they are on a production line. They found the time to listen and react appropriately to any problems or concerns. I am sure that the atmosphere on this ward has encouraged many patients to adopt the positive attitude that contributes to effective cancer treatment. Congratulations to the management of the unit and the hospital for enabling this and many many thanks to the staff for their kindness, patience and efficiency.

I was delighted to read about the high quality of the care you received from the team as well the excellent care you witnessed other patients receiving. I thought your story outlined beautifully all the relational aspects of care that we know matter so much. Our staff work very hard to provide a service that is kind, compassionate and considerate of the individual needs of each patient at all times. For the third year in a row our patients have rated our oncology teams and services to be among the very best in the country with regards to patient experience. We are very proud of them all. At a time when our patients feel at their most vulnerable, it is essential that they feel listened to and that staff will act on any concerns they may have. It is very reassuring to understand that this has been your experience. Your kind reflections on our care will mean a great deal to the team and I will ensure that they are shared with them.
