"My bowel cancer surgery aftercare"

About: Doncaster Royal Infirmary / Colorectal surgery

(as the patient),

Many things, I was put on a general surgery ward, none of the nurses knew anything about epidurals, and when mine fell out they did nothing,

I became very ill after this, and they also didn't recognise I had a bowel ileus and I was left vomiting for 13 hours, they then sent me home after 11 days with severe morphine withdrawals.

They did not have enough knowledge of the after care I required, I also felt I had not been informed and prepared for the aftermath of the surgery and what to expect.

I was in hospital for 11 days, it should have been 4/5 and this was due to lack of care.

We’re really sorry to hear you were so unhappy with the care you received and are very keen to investigate the issues you raised so we can take appropriate action. It’s difficult to respond in detail or to address the issues you’ve highlighted without knowing the full circumstances of your care including the ward involved and when you were there. Our aim is always to do everything we can to resolve any issues as soon as they arise and while the patient is still in hospital. Staff on the General Surgery wards deal with epidurals regularly and they also work closely with the acute pain team to make patients comfortable, so we are very disappointed to hear that you experienced problems. Similarly, we are very sorry to hear about the issues you highlighted with your ileus and aftercare. It’s important that there is good communication between staff and patients and that patients have the information they need and a good understanding of what to expect. We are keen to address this and would welcome further details on the issues you experienced.
