My 18 year old daughter was admitted to russells hall via a&e on 31/08/13, she was dismissed by the nursing staff who saw on her charts that she was diabetic and instantly decided this was the reason for her symptoms despite being told otherwise by us and our daughter. My daughter told doctors on numerous occasions that she had felt ill and had other symptoms for a week previous to admission but she felt that none of them listened to what she was not being listened to by any medical staff. She was transferred to ward c1 1/9/13 at 2pm, she again felt that she wasn't listened to by the staff on the ward, she wasn't told what treatment she was being given and what for. We were on the ward with her for 6hours and had no observations done on her at all during this time on the ward, which is unacceptable for someone who on admission had a fast heart rate and high blood pressure, observations were only done when we questioned the staff. My other daughter went to a nurse and said that her sister needed assistance with toileting as she was hooked up to 2 drips, a nurse came in 5 minutes later with new drips as she assumed this was what was needed rather than toileting. She is in a side room due to her being sick and has a sign on the door to say she should be barrier nursed but not one member of ataff has practised correct procedures for infection control or barrier nursing therefore putting other patients on the ward who were mainly elderly at risk. During our visit our daughter complained of pain so we asked for some pain relief for her but were told she could only have paracetamol as there was no doctors on the ward, we accepted the offer of paracetamol but were shocked to see that the tablets were given to her without checking her wrist band or name card over the bed which wasn't filled in. The nurse then realised that she was written up for anti sickness drugs which she carried in the room out of the original packaging in her ungloved hand and dropped into the pot with the paracetamol without checking her identity again. Aftr we left she was given insulin which was not the one which is prescribed for her, when I queried this with nursing staff I was told there was nothing documented about this but our daughter knows the different colours for the insulin pens so she knows she was given it wrongly. She was told she was to have an injection daily but hasn't had any, she was not given some of her other medication. It has been documented that she has refused food when the truthis is has not been offered anything that has been warm or edible, she asked for one meal but wasgiven ssomething completely different which she doesn't like and didn't eat which is not good for someone with type 1 diabetes. All in all the treatment that she has received in this hospital has been terrible, we feel like we have left our daughter in the care of incompetent staff where we should have trust in these staff to take care of our daughter.
