"My hernia operation"

About: Harmoni / NHS 111 St George's Hospital (Tooting) / General surgery

(as the patient),

I gave myself a hernia one Thursday in July messing round with an abs wheel. On the following Saturday morning I called 111. They were excellent and got me an out-of-hours GP appointment at the Harmoni Clinic at St Georges Hospital a few hours later. I turned up at St Georges and was seen punctually. The GP diagnosed a para-umbilical hernia and asked me to go back to the waiting room. Within an hour I was seen by a couple of surgeons. Being unable to push it back in they advised I would undergo an operation the next day. Within a few hours I was in a bed on the Cavell ward in St Georges hospital. The staff in the Cavell Ward were excellent and made my stay very comfortable. The next day I underwent the operation successfully, and again everyone involved was very helpful, informative and efficient. The next day my wife went into labour and came to St Georges to give birth! I was still in the Cavell ward when she arrived but the staff discharged me swiftly so that I would not miss the birth of my daughter - I cannot thank them enough for this! Six weeks on my hernia seems fully healed. I am astounded by how efficiently and effectively this was dealt with - I had the op within 3 days of getting the hernia! A fantastic service all round - thank you!
