"Throughout the many times of visiting ..."

About: Rotherham Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Throughout the many times of visiting I have always found the staff both courteous and very efficient. They seem to understand the need for efficiency of the hospital as a whole and I can only believe the continuous training in all aspects of health care is bearing fruit. I could not detect any dissatisfaction amongst staff and there is an excellent rapport between the various grades from consultant to nursing assistants. I hope the Trust will continue to invest in further technical achievements to give Rotherham an eminent position in the care of its customers. Well done.

What could be improved

I understand the many difficulties in such a large organisation like this. The only real observation throughout is the quality of the food. It is quite unimaginative; not served to an ill person with too much compassion (although I do understand the staffing concerns) and is well below the food available in the resteraunt. Some improvement should be attempted as a matter of priority.

Thank you for your comments.

Your observation about the quality of food served to patients has been passed to the Catering Manager. The Catering Department have robust monitoring systems in place to measure patient satisfaction, for example the Catering Team visit a minimum of three wards daily, to speak to patients and record their comments regarding: food taste, food temperature, appearance of tray and overall satisfaction, with the score averaging 96%.

All negative comments are immediately passed on to the relevant people within the Catering Department to improve on. In addition a number of Trust staff inspect the kitchen, look at the plating, follow the trolley to the ward and on arrival at the ward sample meals are tasted and scored accordingly. These scores average around 97%. The Chefs are employed to cook for both patients and the restaurant. The food served to patients at both lunch and supper time is also featured in the daily restaurant menu.

The quality of food served to patients is very important to us therefore we appreciate you taking the time to pass on your observations.
