"Attitude of staff "

About: Knowsley Resource & Recovery Centre / Ward T2 (Grasmere Ward)

(as the patient),

During stay at grassmire I find some of the staffs attitude absolutely unbelievable there was a patient distressed saying they felt suicidal I address this with a staff member who's response was oh just ignore them, they are playing on you. I feel some staff take take things personal and hold grudges.

I've also heard staff talking about patients in the corridor surely there information is private and confidential

Also we asked staff about bringing in hot food ie take away which was refused this is fine but I got out of bed to staff eating a takeaway in the corridor sat on chair I found this flabbergasting as there excuse for us was its unhygienic. if that's the case why are staff doing it? I also asked for my sleeper during there takeaway and was told I'd have to wait till they had finished.

Lunch time patients are served salad on the basis you didn't have one the day before and if u did u had to have a sandwich which is dry with no butter. while we are eating sandwiches again staff are in the kitchen stuffing there faces on chips. surely this is not right. we're not allowed biscuits or toast in the evening as we had to finish the cakes. given no patient likes these cakes so we asked could we swap them the response was a clear no.

I saw staff clearly enjoying the biscuits or the cheese and crackers that I think are supplied for patients. That leaves me 15 hours without food and taking my Tablets on an empty Stomach if we don't eat the dry sponge supplied. I think these issues need addressing rite away.

Thank you for taking the time to make this posting, we value feedback from people such as yourself who have personal experience of using our services.

I have contacted the matron responsible for Grasmere Ward, Cath, and understand that you have already discussed your issues with both her and the ward manager.

Cath tells me she has already spoken with the member of staff you feel ignored you. They have assured me that they did not intend you to feel they were not taking your issues seriously or were ignoring you. Cath says that after talking about it you are happy with this outcome.

Staff have been reminded of the importance of patient confidentiality and the need to ensure they cannot be overheard when discussing individuals.

Rooms on Grasmere Ward have been prioritised for patient usage. As there is presently no staff room, staff eat their meals on the ward and use the ward kitchen to prepare meals should they wish. We have advised staff to take their breaks in the ward office whenever possible, as amongst other things this will make it clear when they are on duty and when they are not.

I have been reassured that staff do not take food intended for service users and they have been reminded that this is against Trust Policy. I’ve also been told that it has been clarified to all staff that in the evening hot drinks will be offered along with a choice of cake, biscuits, fruit or toast.

We appreciate the need for clarity regarding the issue of takeaways and are discussing this further with our operational colleagues.

I would like to invite you to attend the Trust’s Catering Focus Group and share your experiences of the food you were served on the ward. The group consists of service users, carers, Trust staff and the catering company we have contracted. It was after discussions at this group that changes have recently been made to the sandwiches provided including use of different breads such as malted and wholemeal and improved fill levels with better quality products. Please let me know if you would wish to attend, my phone number is 01925 664450 or you can contact me via staff.

Cath has asked to make it clear that she is willing to meet with you and any other service user and her / the direct contact number is clearly displayed on all patient notice boards across St Helens and Knowsley adults.
