"Birmingham Treatment Centre - Excellent Care - General Surgery - day case"

About: City Hospital (Birmingham)

(as the patient),

I had a laparoscopy, diathermy to endometriosis, cystoscopy and bladder dystension in Mid July 2013. I was under the care of a Consultant and her team.

Throughout the whole process I was consulted with and empowered to make my own decisions about my treatment. The pre-assessment team were wonderful, so friendly and answered all my questions (and got someone else to come and talk to me if they didn't know the answer to any of them). The nurse printed any information I wanted off to read about my operation the next day and even though I was one of the last patients of the day, she still was welcoming and had a smile on her face the whole time.

Before my operation I was very well looked afer, staff were professional but still friendly and although I was very nervous, I was confident in the whole team's abilities. I was reassured when all of the medical team came and did their checks and asked their questions and the nurses were very good too before the operation.

When the new registrar got confused about one of my procedures (not her fault - a new technique being used in surgery), my consultant/ surgeon came out of surgery just to come and talk to me to put my mind at ease. The anaesthetist and his team were also superb and keeping me calm, informed and comfortable.

The recovery nurse was exceptional and even though I was in a lot of discomfort she always had my dignity in mind and was a warm friendly face that I really needed at that point.

Back in the ward the nurses were really great at checking on me and making sure I was OK, and although it is now a bit of a blur I know that at all times I felt well looked after, safe and everyone had the patients dignity and care in mind on the ward. Even the cleaners on the ward were friendly and helpful. They went to a lot of trouble to make sure I had something I could eat as the first few meals didn't go down very well. Nothing seemed like too much trouble to any of the staff.

I really can't say enough good things about my treatment and I do hope that the staff get to hear about this review because I would like to thank them all. : ) I recovered well from the operation and I know that it is down to the superb treatment I received here.

Thank you for taking the time to comment regarding the care you received at our day case unit. It is encouraging to hear that you felt empowered during the process as the Trust do uphold the ‘no decision about me, without me’ ethos. Toby Lewis, Chief Executive
