"A&E targets causing bed blocking"

About: Royal Gwent Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I had a miscarriage at the start of the week and had to go through the Gwent A&E to get treatment. I arrived on the ward and was told there was no bed for me or the other ladies waiting, as patients that belonged in other departments had been placed on the ward to get them out of A&E within the required timescales. I spent the night on an examination table during one of the most upsetting and painful times of my life. The phone rang constantly and the poor nursing staff took flak from every A&E nurse and husband who called as they had to turn women away during a very difficult, emotional and frightening time for them. All the staff were amazing and they obviously felt helpless with the situation. I understand the need for targets, but these staff need real help, not new policies.
