"City Hospital Birmingham A&E And SAU admission"

About: City Hospital / Accident and emergency City Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

Went in with abdominal cramps and a high temperature. I was seen promptly by the triage nurse who was lovely. However, after this, my experience of A&E went rapidly downhill; from the charge nurse who told me I was quite unwell to the agency nurse who tried to cannulate me 3 times and then proceeded to take blood tests off the cannula. I know this is wrong (I am a healthcare professional who has worked in A&E). The doctor then proceeded in my opinion to faff about for 4 hours trying to decide my diagnosis and came to no conclusion and admitted me to SAU where my experience changed. I was seen and discharged within 2 hours by 2 lovely doctors and I can't fault the nurses who couldn't do enough for me.

Keep up the good work SAU. A&E, please change your attitude and practice. Shame that this marred my experience.

Dear Rob, I am sorry to hear about your mixed experience at City Hospital. SAU is a dedicated facility for surgical emergencies and it is good that you found that that system worked well. Toby Lewis, Chief Executive
