"Surgery, lack of communication and poor aftercare."

About: James Paget University Hospital / General surgery James Paget University Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I have a left hip and right knee replacement. Unfortunately I tripped and broke my right hip. Taken to James Paget hospital, had to wait about 15 - 20 mins. before being seen but don't consider that to be a problem. Eventually admitted to a ward, had to wait for at least two days for surgery due to possibility of blood loss due to my medication.

Following surgery I discovered that the joint had been plated, not replaced as had been discussed. The Physiotherapist managed to pull out the catheter on my wrist whilst trying to force my knee straight. (It hasn't been straight for several years - he hadn't read my notes).

I do not recall seeing the surgeon after the operation neither do I recall seeing a doctor post operative other than one who fitted a catheter.

I was discharged from the hospital in great pain which continued for several weeks.

I attended a 6 week post op consultation with the surgeon who hardly spoke to me, didn't seem interested in the pain but said if it continued for a year to come back and he'd put a replacement joint in. The fact that my right leg was 1. 5 inches shorter than previous and my right foot was at about 20 degrees out of alignment seemed to be of no interest.

Since then, I have had surgery at the Norfolk & Norwich which has been as good as the Paget was bad.
