"Still unable to walk"

About: Darent Valley Hospital / Accident and emergency Darent Valley Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I had an accident in a river. I cut my little toe and was told I'd broken my metarsal. The 5th one.

I happened to do this out of the area I lived in. So I went to the local hospital at the time. I was greeted by receptionist. Not very pleasant once she could not find me on system. She said its a 4 hour wait for minor injuries. Ok on a Sunday afternoon it's expected. So I said fine.

I hopped to a seat. I only went because of infection in the cut. I could not put weight on my foot at all. Once I was seen the nurse was helpful. She dressed the cut and said I had broken it. I was told to walk on my heel and that I had to see orthopaedic at my local hospital Daret Valley in Kent. I had to ask for crutches and I could not heel walk. Was also told they would normally air cast it but because our if area they would leave it for my hospital.

I them went to Darent Valley next day. Waited 2 hours in A&E. to be told dressings ok and done nicely. Book into fracture clinic but there is a week or so wait. Made me feel I was making a fuss.

I asked about cast etc. She asked another nurse and he said no, it be fine. So I go to fracture clinic after nearly 2 weeks. My foot still swelling up and down. Still could not put weight on it. After running hour late. I got told 3 options have a foot cast or air cast or leave it as it is. I opted to leave it on the advice that it will heal. 3 weeks on my under foot still brushing my toe and side of foot hurts can't bear weight fully. Still swelling at ankle joint.

I not due back for another 6 weeks. I feel as though I'm palmed off and making a fuss but I really can't walk right and get about or even drive. I'm off work as I'm a sales assistant. I feel really let down by NHS. Not sure what to so. Need help or advice.

Thank you for taking the time to post this comment regarding both your experiences at another hospital and also Darent Valley Hospital. I am sorry to read that your experiences at Darent Valley Hospital were not up to what you expected and please be assured that we would have no intention to palm anybody off. If you are still experiencing severe pain and feel that you would benefit from seeing somebody sooner than your next appointment please can you contact me sue.daniels@dvh.nhs.uk and I will investigate this on your behalf.

With best wishes
