"Day care surgery"

Anything else?

The entire medical team we're superb. Explanations were thorough and detailed, and the anaesthetist in particular was very reassuring and concerned. Equally commendable was the nursing team. Sister was there keeping an eye on everything and spoke to each patient, it's clear that the ward is expertly managed. All members of the team, nurses and health care assistants were professional, friendly and reassuring. However, there are two matters which would make the experience less anxious. Firstly, it would be really helpful if the procedures which take place in day care were explained before admission. I was told NBM from midnight and did not go to theatre until 3.30. Sitting in a waiting area in gown and socks which had to be donned in a changing room with no information about next steps is very unsettling. And secondly the food was inedible. White mothers pride bread for breakfast, and meals that went back untouched by any patient were the norm. One doctor asked me why I wasn't eating my lunch. I said it was disgusting he said he totally agreed with me. With Lewisham market down the road with masses of cheap fruit and vegetables, why serve tinned apricots and mushy peas? It seems crazy that superb medical teams and excellent nurses are not supported in their work by good nutrition. Food in the bin helps no one. So, my advice would be to ensure your relatives bring food in. You won't want much, but it does need to be edible.
