"Victor Bonney Ward"

About: Queen Charlotte's Hospital

Anything else?

My daughter had a laparoscopic hysterectomy and was a patient on the Victor Bonney ward. I have to admit to being alarmed and somewhat horrified at the attitude of some of the staff. Although the doctors who attended her were sympathetic and helpful; the same could not be said of several of the nurses. Their attitude and approach left a lot to be desired. My daughter was left without pain relief for 4 hours. The wrong patient's notes were at the bottom of her bed. She was left for fifteen minutes in the toilet/shower despite using the buzzer to call for assistance, They did not help her or advise her how to sit up in bed saying that she would have to work it out for herself. When the sanitary towel given to my daughter after the operation fell onto the floor (and she could not bend to pick it up) it remained there despite my daughter asking for someone to pick it up; this was very humiliating for her. She was given no follow up surgical appointment. They were generally very curt in their manner. I know the NHS is receiving a lot of bad publicity at the moment and I have no wish to add to it as I know a great many people are working tirelessly to improve the patients' lot. However, in this case these nurses did not appear overworked in the slightest and lacked the care, compassion and pride in their work that one would hope was a prerequisite for such an important calling.

We are extremely concerned and troubled by your comments and the care that you highlight to us; this is certainly not in keeping with the standards we strive so hard to achieve. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss this with you either face to face or on the telephone so that we can ensure that this is dealt with in a robust manner. We would ask you to please call 0203 313 0088(PALS) to discuss, in confidence.
