"Langley Ward! A Very Mixed Experience!"

About: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital

Anything else?

I found my experience in Langley ward a mixed experience! both with some lovely first rate very conscientious caring friendly staff who could not do enough for their patients but also sadly there were some unhelpful staff who I found to be very uncaring and with an attitude and way of speaking to me that was abrupt sometimes bordering on rude who did not take such good care with their patients' Firstly the positives of my hospital experience. Most of the doctors I encountered were very friendly caring and conscientious and involved me fully in decisions about my medical treatment I felt in safe hands as they were very determined to find out what was wrong with me and to treat my problems promptly and did not discharge me until they were 100% happy that I was well enough to go home and also ensured that I had the equipment essential for my full recovery delivered to my home before my discharge i.e. an air bed hand rails and a high toilet seat which was I thought outstanding care and service! .All the porters ,cleaners, and catering ,were very helpful friendly and nothing were too much trouble for them. However the nurses and healthcare assistants were a mixed bunch I had some lovely nurses /healthcare assistants who were vary caring and helpful .However the ward was let down by the not so conscientious nurses/healthcare assistants. Some examples- I had this very nasty leaking wound that soaked my bed sheets and which I did put off asking for help as long as possible but on frequent occasions when I was very uncomfortable because the fluid soaked sheets were getting unbearable I rang my bell to politely request for them to be changed though a healthcare assistant/nurse would answer my bell and tell me they would sort it out.they would not come back and I would be left for several hours in soaking sheets. Sometimes I would remind them after a couple of hours and still they disappeared for another few hours. Another time they refused at night to find me a dry hospital gown when mine was soaking wet from wound discharge. some nurses assistants also ignored some important problems such as when I had a malfunctioning airbed which was essential for recovery from this wound .A nurse consulted about this problem in daytime did not make any effort to find out what was wrong with it or find someone who knew about airbed's.She just walked out of room and did not return! There is not enough room to list all problems and issues on this review .However I will finish by saying that there were also some first rate healthcare assistants and nurses as well as the bad ones.In particular there was one first rate male healthcare assistant who was brilliant. He took the trouble to regularly check I was ok and actually noticed my soaking wet sheets and changed them without being asked! Also there were other lovely assistants and nurses So all in all in all a very mixed experience!

It is disappointing that you had such a mixed experience in our hospital with a good response from some staff and a lack of care from others. Thank you for letting us know about your stay and we will pass your feedback to the Ward Sister.
