When I was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 I found the treatment excellent. However the absence of self-help groups was a serious short-coming. I learned more from other patients in 10 minutes than doctors. When I did have complaints I had no idea who was in charge of my overall treatment. There is a small proportion of staff who are off-hand and do as little as possible. The culture is unduly tolerant of their indifference. Turnover of doctors seemed inordinately high, even for a teaching hospital. Although medically first class, quality of life has low priority with no-one seemingly responsible for the whole person. There was inadequate budgeting and support for facilitated self-help. Few professionals are interested because it is not 'medicine' and is not what they are trained for.
