My husband had his first cycle of chemo and 10 days after caught an infection. Went to A&E on an evening in late July 2013 not too bad. Anti biotics were not given until an hour and three quarters after presentation this was despite his red neutropenic scepsis card which states to be given within 1 hr.

Did not go to a ward until 2. 00 in the morning. Left in a side ward for days with little or no contact. Was then transferred to another more appropriate ward which was no better. Nurses were ok but did not see a doctor from the Friday until the Monday and he didn't know what was going on also did not have a blood test from the Thursday until the following Tuesday when he was discharged.

Back in on Friday and still in now. Had to sleep in a cubicle in A+E from 7. 15 Friday night until 11. 40 Saturday morning because no side room.

Nurses are fine but such a dire lack of doctors at night and at weekends. He has totally lost faith and I can see him giving up. Doesn't ever want to go in again. I have seen a strong man go from positive to totally negative in just 2 weeks.

I honestly am amazed and god knows what the nurses have to put up with. Must feel totally demoralised.

I am sorry that your husband's care has left him feeling disillusioned. There are occasions when there are high numbers of patients who need to be admitted via the Emergency department when inpatient beds, and in particular side rooms, are not immediately available and this may be why your husband was in the Emergency department overnight. If your husband feels well enough he could contact PALS to talk about his poor experience and this could then be taken forward with staff. PALS can be reached on (024) 7686 5550.
