"My daughter was admitted to Shugbourough ..."

About: Stafford Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

My daughter was admitted to Shugbourough ward to have a broken arm reset. The ward was clean, and the floor cleaned twice on the day we were there. all of the staff were lovely, and explained things thoroughly to my child as well as to me. I feel that she received excellent care on the day.

What could be improved

When I took her to her first outpatients on Tuesday morning we saw a different Doc from the one we were scheduled to see, as he hadn't arrived for clinic. The Doctor we saw was great, but said that he couldn't fit her in to the theatre list that day or the next, although he did comment that he was surprised that she hadn't been admitted as an emergency case on the Sunday when we first brought her to A and E. Her arm was in a back slab and she wasn't in pain, but the thought of having it reset ws distressing for her (and for me!), so it would have been nice to get it out of the way sooner.

Thank you for your comments about the care provided at Stafford hospital, we will make sure these are passed on to the staff of Shugborough Ward.

The Trust has dedicated time in theatre each day for emergency surgery and cases are prioritised based on their clinic need. It is not always possible or clinically safe to carry out the surgery on the day emergency cases arise. As a result patients are either admitted to hospital to be observed prior to surgery, or if appropriate discharged home to come in for their surgery at an agreed time . We appreciate that this can be a distressing time, whether the patient is in hospital or at home and we continue to do all we can to avoid delays.
